Professional Commitment – Organizational Mechanisms, Individual Characteristics And Individual Mechanisms
The professional commitment of lecturers at the university level is one of the important factors necessary to produce qualified graduates. Empirical research was conducted to discover factors that significantly influence lecturers’ commitment variables. This study was conducted among 252 lecturers in four private universities located in Bogor, Indonesia. The data were obtained by means of a valid and reliable questionnaire. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the effects of organizational variables, which were the organizational climate, individual characteristics which was self-efficacy, and job involvement as the intervening variable. The data analysis employed the path analysis method. The research findings showed that there was a significant influence of self-efficacy on professional commitment, and there was a significant influence of job involvement on professional commitment. Conversely, there was no significant influence of organizational on professional commitment. However, there was a significant influence of organizational climate on professional commitment through job involvement. In addition, there was a significant influence of self-efficacy on professional commitment through job involvement. Involvement indicators that have a high loading factor. By improving those indicators, it can be predicted lecturers’ professional commitment will improve.
